Issue #2 opens with Kevin and Joe outside an abandoned warehouse debating over how to attack a group of Harpies housed within.

A new-comer, Kirby Hero ("rhymes with zero"), arrives and informs the two heros that defeating the birds is part of a quest his father has given him. Before the two can reply, Kirby breaks into the warehouse to fight the Harpies.

After the battle Kevin begins scolding Kirby for his reckless attack -- Kirby ignores the reprimands and diverts his attention to the old man who preceded them into the warehouse. They find him unconscious from a Harpy attack. Joe Phat uses his healing abilities to mend the old man's injuries. Kevin, taking the role of the
de facto leader, quickly follows his verbal attack on Kirby with one on Joe -- noticing how the Trickster Hero avoided the battle completely.

animationAs the three heroes tend to the old man, they are completely unaware they are being tracked by the Pale Incanter. He sends his children -- the Sprigginflints, to see if there are other heroes with the trio.
As Kirby and Kevin relate their personal tales to one another, Kirby mentions he is on a "quest." He has been given 12 rather "laborious" tasks to complete as penance -- for what he doesn't say. As the issue closes, the three heroes head out for lunch after the old man (who introduces himself as Wally Ut) raves to them that he is the second Mage who Mirth told Kevin he was to meet. After a failed demonstration of his magical powers, the three discount him as a crackpot and leave. The old man belatedly notices his hat is missing. Meanwhile, overhead, the Sprigginflints watch their prey.
