Falling Down

In Mage I we find out early on that Kevin Matchstick has a rather severe fear of heights.

One might easily equate this with a fear of success or station in life (and the attendant fear of failure that accompanies such success). By the end of Mage I he appears to have come to terms with this fear. However, in Mage II, we see Kevin is still far from comfortable with heights.

Throughout The Hero Defined we witness Kevin fall from great heights repeatedly and can only wonder what this may symbolize. Maybe it illustrates him falling short of a goal. Maybe it shows an ongoing struggle with his lofty position among his peers. Maybe it's just eye-candy. One thing is for certain: the reported title of Mage III is The Hero Denied. Perhaps these not-so-soft landings of Kevin's foreshadow a more disastrous future event. Ultimately, King Arthur himself was all too human.
